As the government pushes through tougher anti-fraud laws, the agency tasked with actually catching those exploiting the NDIS has been quietly notching up significant results. The Fraud Fusion Taskforce has now saved the scheme an estimated $880 million, offering a window into the scale of the integrity challenge the NDIS faces.
What the Taskforce Is
The Fraud Fusion Taskforce is a multi-agency operation, bringing together 25 government agencies, co-led by the National Disability Insurance Agency and Services Australia. It also includes the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, and the Australian Federal Police, pooling investigative resources to target fraud across the scheme.
The taskforce was established to tackle a problem that grew alongside the scheme itself: as the NDIS expanded to support more than 770,000 people and approached $54 billion in annual cost, it became a target for organised criminals, dishonest providers, and opportunists.
The Results So Far
The numbers give a sense of the scale. The taskforce has overseen around $880 million in overall savings, with a substantial increase in criminal convictions, prison sentences, and disruption of fraudulent operations. There are hundreds of active investigations underway, with investigators focused on serious organised criminals, dishonest tax agents, allied health professionals, and NDIS providers doing the wrong thing.
A recent case illustrates how the taskforce operates. An Adelaide woman was arrested and charged over an alleged plot to defraud more than $5 million from the NDIS, following an investigation that began after the NDIA identified unauthorised access to protected participant records. The investigation drew on the combined resources of the AFP, NDIA, ACIC, and the NDIS Commission, exactly the kind of multi-agency coordination the taskforce was built for.
Protecting Participants, Not Just Money
While the savings figure grabs headlines, the taskforce’s work has a direct human dimension. Previous operations have identified thousands of participants who may have been affected by fraudulent providers, and supported many to transition to safer arrangements. In other words, cracking down on fraud isn’t just about protecting public funds, it’s about protecting vulnerable people from exploitation and ensuring they receive genuine, quality support.
The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commissioner has described the community as having zero tolerance for fraud, stating that funds entrusted to support some of the most vulnerable members of the community must be spent appropriately.
The Bigger Picture
The taskforce’s work sits alongside the broader integrity reforms now passing through Parliament, including tougher penalties and new powers to check claims before they’re paid. Together, they represent a sustained effort to shore up the scheme’s integrity at a time when its long-term sustainability is under intense scrutiny.
