How to Read Aged Care Star Ratings: A Family’s Guide to Choosing Well

Published:

Choosing a residential aged care home is one of the hardest decisions many families face. The government’s Star Ratings system exists to make it easier, but the ratings are only useful if you understand what’s behind them. Here’s a plain-language guide to reading them well.

What Star Ratings Measure

Every residential aged care home receives an Overall Star Rating between 1 and 5 stars, with more stars indicating higher quality care. That overall figure is built from four sub-categories: Residents’ Experience, Compliance, Staffing and Quality Measures.

Each sub-category tells you something different. Residents’ Experience comes from face-to-face surveys with residents themselves. Compliance reflects regulatory decisions. Staffing measures care time against targets. Quality Measures tracks indicators like pressure injuries, falls and unplanned weight loss.

“The more stars an aged care home receives, the better the quality of care,” the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing states.

Recent Changes Worth Knowing

The system has been strengthened recently, which matters when comparing homes. From late 2025, the Staffing rating changed so that homes must now meet both their total care minute target and their registered nurse care minute target to reach three stars or more. These changes began appearing in ratings from the 2026 quarterly updates.

The Compliance rating has also been toughened, now incorporating assessment against the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards. Importantly, if a home scores just 1 or 2 stars for Compliance, its Overall Rating is capped at that level, which is a strong signal worth heeding.

How to Use the Ratings Wisely

Star Ratings are a genuinely useful starting point, but they work best alongside your own investigation. Don’t stop at the overall number, click through to see the breakdown across all four sub-categories, since a home might score well overall but lag in an area that matters most to your family.

Be aware of the limitations too. Residents’ Experience surveys capture a sample of residents, not every voice, and a two or three star home may still provide safe, caring support. The ratings reduce the risk of a poor choice, but they don’t replace seeing a place for yourself. You can compare homes using the My Aged Care Find a Provider tool.

What to Do Alongside the Ratings

The strongest approach combines the data with real-world checks. Visit the homes on your shortlist, ideally more than once and at different times of day. Talk to current residents and their families. Ask about staff turnover, how complaints are handled, and what daily life actually looks like.

Trust your observations as much as the numbers. A warm, well-run home is something you can often sense in person, and that impression is a valuable complement to the official rating.

The Bigger Picture

Star Ratings are part of a wider push for transparency and accountability in aged care, and the tightening of the criteria shows the system maturing. For families, the ratings are a powerful tool, most powerful when used as the beginning of your research rather than the end.
